Rise of the Phoenix documentary tells the compelling stories of four Chinese women from different social and economic backgrounds seen through the director’s eyes as she explores the changing roles and rights of women in China.
Instead of dwelling on the problems of China’s feudalistic past or focusing on the present remarkable strides made by individual and collective efforts, May May Tchao tries to give voice to these women by raising awareness of their inequities and acknowledging their rights under the burdens of a long sexist tradition.
We hope to inspire women to overcome gender bias by changing their own attitudes on self-worth and encourage them to move forward to make choices for themselves through education, economic participation and activism. For the developing world, this film reaffirms the transformational power and potential of those who were once considered the weaker sex.
