As a Chinese-born American woman, I have long recognized the issues of gender bias in China. My mother has recounted it through her own family experience in the pre-Mao era. After Mao’s liberation and the great economic leap forward, are Chinese women as liberated and as equal as Mao had purported to be? If they are holding up half the sky, then why all the abandoned girl babies? Suicidal wives? Gender imbalance?
I invite you to listen to these voices and re-evaluate a woman’s worth. ~ May May Tchao, Director
